Just had its release here in the Netherlands but already had a wide screening in Italy and the US, The Company you Keep is the latest feature directed by Robert Redford. The young and eager journalist Ben Shepard, played by Shia LaBeouf, gets himself involved in a complex mystery after identifying a lawyer as a former radicalist. Nice detail is the journalist bag that Shepard takes with him no matter where he travels.
The Filson Computerbag Padded is used by him to stash his laptop, all of his files and of course his little notebook and pen used for all he discovers during his search. The bag is beautifully worn-in already as you can see in some of the stills, the bridle leather shoulder strap is faded at places and the rugged twill canvas is softened. Just as with a pair of Red Wing boots, the beauty on a Filson bag comes with age. If you're interested in cinema and the cool, have a look at my own blog Still Stile, where I capture stills with menswear and style seen in the movies.
You must be familiar with the classic Marlon Brando picture from 1953, The Wild One. The movie where Brando stars as the ultra cool Johnny Strabler, and with a story partially inspired by the Boozefighter Motorcycle Club active in the same period.
The Boozefighters MC was founded by William Forkner, who served the US Army as a waist gunner in the Pacific. The reason why he enlisted? "All of my friends went into service. There was no one left to drink with". It was a motorcycle club that pushed the limits of their bikes and themselves and they soon gathered quite some attention. Especially after the infamous "Hollister Incident" in 1947, where a party with racing and drinking got a bit rough. The incident has been immortilized in The Wild One and Lee Marvin's character is believed to be based on Forkner himself.
In the old black & white photographs from their archive, the resemblance with the images from The Wild One is abundant. The leather motorcycle jackets, WWII pilot jackets, selvedge denim, Engineer style boots and ofcourse amazing motorcycles.

Just found out about this amazing documentary film illustrating the life, skills & character of the turn-of-the-century Maine lumbermen & river drivers. Using oral histories, rare films & photography 'In The Blood' presents an accurate and vivid portrait of the men who pioneered their way through the 19th century Maine woods. The documentary was made by Sumner McKane, a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and filmmaker based in mid-coast Maine and is a truly amazing source of inspiration.
Tenue de Nîmes teamed up with British denim professor William Krol at Tender Co with whom they created 12 hand-numbered jeans. Rather than using a standard yarn-dyed fabric these jeans were cut from piece-dyed cloth. Piece-dyeing heavy canvas like this is usually done over rollers in a large vat, using a carefully controlled automated process, but the canvas for these Tender x Tenue de Nimes jeans has been scrunched into a small vat, causing it to crease up in the dye which leaves marks and streaks on the cloth. It means that each pair of jeans is subtly unique. The final color of these jeans is reminiscent of a standard beige duck fabric, but the shade is warmer and richer- in fact its color is similar to that of a flowerpot.
